Diabetes Services at Wentworth-Douglass Hospital is committed to providing you with the best diabetes care possible. Our program is recognized as meeting the national standards for Diabetes self-management education by the American Diabetes Association since 1999. We work with your primary care provider to plan diabetes care and educational services that will help you to learn to manage your diabetes and control your blood sugar levels. And, controlling blood sugar can prevent the complications of diabetes! .
Diabetes Services is dedicated to helping you live successfully with diabetes. We provide individualized diabetes education and self-management training for children and adults, in private and small group sessions. As an educator-based practice, we strive to supplement the services provided by your physician, and work in a cooperative effort with your entire health care team.
The program covers all aspects of Type 1, Type 2, Pre-Diabetes and gestational diabetes. After an initial visit, the plan will be tailored to you, and may cover:
- Monitoring
- Nutrition
- Insulin
- Exercise
- Sick Days
- Personal Care
- Oral Medications
- Dealing with Stress
- Long-Term Complications
- Short-Term Complications (low and high blood sugar)
Some of the Programs that we offer:
Steps to Success classes for individuals with Diabetes covers all the information, tools, and support you need for self management. During this 4-part series, you will have the opportunity to explore and share your diabetes experiences with other people.
Diabetes Support & Education Group is an ongoing meeting of people that have had education and continue to come for support and further information, share stories and network.
Kids Camp is our very successful summer camp for children with diabetes - held in the end of June each year at The Works Family Health & Fitness Center in Somersworth.
Sharps Exchange program is offered once a month for the safe transfer and disposal of needles and sharp supplies from our patients with diabetes.

You may be referred at any time by yourself, your doctor, or other healthcare provider. You will need a prescription or referral requesting diabetes self-management education from your doctor if you desire insurance coverage for services.
