Wentworth-Douglass Hospital is one of 600 hospitals nationwide and one of 15 hospitals in the Boston metro area recognized in the 2010-2011 listing of US News Best Hospitals.
Rankings include the categories of patient survival, nurse staffing, number of services available for patients and technology. In Wentworth-Douglass Hospital’s high performing category of Ear, Nose and Throat the hospital’s patient survival was “much better than expected”, technology and patient services rated “highest” and results additionally highlighted the availability of trauma services and intensivists.
Hospital President & CEO Gregory Walker said the hospital is honored to receive this high level recognition and thanks all hospital employees and medical staff for their dedication to high quality patient care.
“We are grateful to be listed along with some of Boston’s major academic hospitals as a US News Best Hospital,” Walker said. “This ranking recognizes the expertise of our Ear, Nose and Throat specialists, the entire surgical team and everyone involved in the care of our patients. It also highlights the important role of nurses and the value of state-of-the-art technology in the hands of our medical experts.”
According to the US News Media Group release, 4,852 U.S. hospitals were “whittled down to much smaller groups by specialty—898 in cancer and 1,598 in orthopedics, for instance—that met stringent benchmarks such as a minimum number of certain types of serious cases. The top 25 percent of hospitals in each specialty that met those standards were identified, using the scoring methods employed in the national rankings. Out of those 25 percent, hospitals within metropolitan areas with populations of 1 million or more were ranked in their metro area.”
The annual listing ranks hospitals by specialty and specific criteria. According to US News Media Group, to be considered a hospital first had to meet at several criteria including the availability of medical technology, “such as a PET/CT scanner and certain precision radiation therapies that are considered important in a high-quality medical facility” – technology available at Wentworth-Douglass Hospital.
