Genetics Clinic

The Program for Cancer Genetics provides specialized counseling and testing to those individuals and families who desire evaluation and knowledge of the risk of predisposition for certain cancers based on personal or family history or tumor type. Services are provided by a board certified Genetic Counselor from the Massachusetts General Hospital Cancer Center, Center for Cancer Risk Analysis, located in Boston and Danvers, MA.

Eligible individuals and families may have:

  • Cancer diagnosed at an earlier age than usual
  • Multiple biological relatives with cancer
  • Biological relatives in two or more generations with cancer
  • An individual diagnosed with more than one primary cancer
  • Family members who have developed a rare or unusual cancer
  • Individuals with bilateral cancer of paired organs

A Cancer Genetics assessment can offer personalized information and referral for on-going treatment, monitoring and follow-up for hereditary cancers including:

  • Breast
  • Gynecological cancers: ovarian, uterine and fallopian tube
  • Gastrointestinal: colon, rectal, pancreatic and gastric
  • Genitourinary: kidney
  • Endocrine: thyroid, pituitary and adrenal
  • Skin: melanoma

Through The Program for Cancer Genetics at the Seacoast Cancer Center, counseling and genetic testing is available for the following syndromes as well as others that are less common:

  • Hereditary breast and ovarian cancer syndrome (BRCA 1/2)
  • Hereditary colon cancer syndrome (HNPCC/Lynch, FAP/Garnder's, MYH)
  • Hereditary renal cell cancer/Von-Hipple-Lindeau Disease (VHL)
  • Hereditary melanoma
  • Li-Fraumeni syndrome (LFS)
  • Cowden syndrome (CS) and
  • Multiple endocrine neoplasias (MEN)

Genetic counseling is provided by a Certified Genetic Counselor. The counselor translates technical and complicated genetic information so it is more easily understood and relevant to the family. A counselor can help individuals and family members understand how personal and/or family history is involved in some medical conditions, including cancer.
