The Operating Room provides 24-hour coverage for patients. Specialty categories include general, orthopedic, obstetrics/gynecology, thoracic/chest, vascular, ear, nose and throat, urology, lithotripsy, ophthalmology, podiatry, oral, neurosurgery, spine and plastic/reconstruction.
The OR uses state-of-the-art technology to support all specialty categories of surgery. Video systems are used to guide a surgeon during minimally-invasive surgery to inspect and/or perform procedures inside a body organ or cavity such as gall bladder removal, knee arthroscopy, hysterectomy and hernia repair. Specialized lasers (CO2, Argon, Holmium) are used for a variety of surgeries ranging from eye, to vascular and urological procedures. Lithotripsy, a non-invasive technique utilizing shock waves to locate and fragment kidney stones, is also available. Lithotripsy can eliminate the need for surgery and reduce recovery time.

Same Day Surgery
The Same Day Surgery Unit provides individual and comprehensive care for same-day surgery patients. Featuring private pre-op and post-op rooms as well as state-of-the-art operating rooms, everything has been designed to maximize your comfort. To better meet the needs of pediatric patients parents may be allowed to accompany their child during the anesthesia induction phase to make the surgical experience less stressful.
As with all surgeries the Post Anesthesia Recovery Unit supports the safe and rapid recovery of patients who have received an anesthetic. Vital signs like blood pressure, temperature, pulse, respiration, and EKG are monitored. Patients are closely observed to assure that pain control and psychological needs are met.
The Same Day Surgery Unit offers high-level care with board-certified surgeons and qualified staff in an outpatient setting. Typical procedures include skin biopsies, cataract surgery, sinus surgery and other ENT procedures, arthroscopy, hernia repair, and gynecological procedures. For more information please call (603)740-2282.
Robotic Surgery with the daVinciSTM Surgical System
No longer in the realm of science fiction, robotic surgery is a reality at Wentworth-Douglass Hospital - the first hospital in northern New England to acquire the robotic surgical system, daVinciSTM, offered by Intuitive Surgical.
The daVinciSTM System is the first and only laparoscopic robot approved by the FDA for urologic, general and gynecologic surgery. The daVinciSTM Surgical System allows surgeons to perform more precise, less invasive procedures offering numerous benefits for patients and surgeons. For patients the potential benefits include shorter hospital stays, less pain and scarring, less risk of infection, less blood loss, faster recovery and quicker return to normal activities.
The daVinciSTM System's high-resolution 3D stereo viewer is designed to provide surgeons with an immersive experience. To perform a procedure, the surgeon uses the console's master controls to maneuver the four robotic arms, which securely hold the patented EndoWrist instruments and high-magnification camera. The EndoWrist instruments' jointed-wrist design exceeds the natural range of motion of the human hand; motion scaling and tremor reduction further interpret and refine the surgeon's hand movements. The daVinciSTM System incorporates multiple, redundant safety features designed to minimize opportunities for human error when compared with traditional approaches.
Patients should discuss all the specific risks and benefits of robotics with their provider before electing to proceed.
Post Anesthesia Recovery Unit
Post Anesthesia Recovery Unit assures the safe and rapid recovery of patients who have received an anesthetic. Blood pressure, temperature, pulse, respirations, EKG etc. are observed and monitored. Patients are closely observed to assure that pain control and psychological needs are met.
