Wentworth-Douglass Hospital & Health Foundation
02/13 - Foundation Volunteer Levasseur receives Quality of Life Award
For the past eight years Foundation Board Member Tom Levasseur has generously invested in the Wentworth-Douglass Hospital & Health Foundation (WDH&HF), giving his time and financial support for cardiovascular care and related programs at Wentworth-Douglass Hospital (WDH). In recognition for his volunteerism, he will be one of six finalists awarded the coveted Quality of Life grant from the Million Dollar Round Table (MDRT) Foundation at their annual meeting in June. Awards will range from $5,000 to $25,000. Levasseur’s award will be granted to the WDH&H Foundation in his honor and used to support scholarships for Camp Meridian, a three-day camp for children with heart disease.

Levasseur received life-saving cardiac care at Wentworth-Douglass Hospital several years ago and has expressed his gratitude multiple times. In 2010 he donated $10,000 toward a new Cardiovascular Interventional Lab at WDH and last year made another personal gift of $10,000 to name a patient room on the cardiovascular floor in the Hospital’s new addition.

Levasseur recently received a thank you letter from Tammy Scarponi, the mother of a little girl with heart disease, for allowing her daughter Samantha (Sam) and other youngsters with heart disease to benefit from Camp Meridian free of charge.

“Through her years at Camp Meridian Sam has learned that she can be anything and do anything despite her heart condition. She has gained confidence in herself and learned how to solve challenges with her team and achieved personal and team goals through all the fantastic activities provide,” Scarponi said. “Thank you from the bottom of my heart and from the hearts of each of the kids you will touch with your incredible gift.”

Camp Meridian, founded by pediatric cardiologist Naomi Gauthier, MD, is a three-day, overnight camp directed by medical personnel and trained counselors at Camp Merrowvista in Tuftonboro, NH, for children with heart disease. The Camp offers a series of unique, fun-filled, guided activities, allowing the children to realize their own untapped potential.

A severe angina attack during a friendly game of racquetball in 2002 stopped former football coach Tom Levasseur in his tracks and sent him to WDH’s cardiac catheterization lab. The treatment saved his heart and left him with an indelible impression about a truly caring hospital.

“This place (WDH) just resonates with me. It was the way I was treated that impressed me the most about this hospital.” Eventually he connected with the Foundation’s Planned Giving Advisory Council, later joining the Stewardship Committee and the Annual Fund Committee before joining the Foundation Board in 2009.

Levasseur is a life member of the Million Dollar Round Table, Top of the Table member and a Diamond Knight of the Million Dollar Round Table Foundation. He is the principal of Beacon Retirement Group - a local independent financial advisor helping people with their retirement and estate planning issues.
