Childbirth Education Classes

Pre-Registration and payment is required for the following childbirth classes along with a registration form:

There is no fee for the following classes, but pre-registration is required:

There is NO pre-registration for the following:

The Works Family Health & Fitness Center in Somersworth, NH also offers new mom exercise classes
such as Prenatal Aquatic Exercise and Mommy & Me Exercise.


The following classes are held at Wentworth-Douglass Hospital in Dover:

Prepared Childbirth Series 

 Top

This class includes traditional childbirth education, including an overview of labor, birth, medications, potential complications and postpartum care. A tour of the Women & Children's Center is included in this class. Classes meet one night a week for 5 weeks from 6:30 - 8:30 p.m. Cost is $110/per couple. The 2013 dates are: Mondays from Wednesdays May 8th - June 5th; Thursdays May 30th - June 27th; Wednesdays July 10- August 7; and Thursdays July 18 - August 15.

 

 

Celebrating Pregnancy and Birth

Top

This 2-day class is for mothers and couples who are interested in a deeper exploration of childbirth preparation. The class focuses on natural ways to cope with pain and fear. Participants learn several relaxation techniques. A tour of the Women & Children's Center is included. The class is Mondays from 6:30 - 8:30 p.m. Cost is $50/per couple. The 2013 dates are as follows: June 10 & 17th and Sept. 9 & 16.
   
Weekend Prepared Childbirth Class 

 Top

This 2-day class has been designed as an alternative to the 6-week series, offering the same information. A tour of the Women & Children's Center is included in this class. Class is held Saturday and Sunday 9 a.m. - 1 p.m. Cost is $145/per couple. The 2013 dates are: May 18th & 19th; June 22nd & 23rd; and July 13th & 14th
   
One-Day Childbirth Class Top
This one day class provides you with the same information you would recieve in the two-day weekend class (listed above). A tour of the Women & Children's Center is included. Cost is $145. This class is offered the following Satrudays from 9 - 4 p.m.  May 11th and June 8th.
Refresher Childbirth Class

  Top

This 2-day class is offered to those who have attended childbirth classes in a previous pregnancy. It is intended as an update on childbirth options. A tour of the Women & Children's Center is included. Class is offered Mondays from 6:30 - 8:30 p.m. Cost is $70/per couple. The upcoming 2013 dates are: April 22nd & 29th
   
HypnoBirthing Class

  Top

In this 5-week series, you will learn a relaxation technique to help you maintain an atmosphere of calm and relaxation during birth. This class will guide you through the philosophy and techniques of normal, gentle birthing.  Partners will learn effective tools in assisting the birthing mother. A tour of the Women & Children's Center is included in this class. Class is offered Thursdays from 6:30 - 8:30 p.m. Cost is $145/per couple, which includes materials. Upcoming dates are:   May 9 - June 6, June 27th - August 1st  (skipping 7/4), and Aug 22 - Sept. 19.

   
Prenatal Yoga

   Top

This 6-week series is offered to you at any stage of your pregnancy and at any level of practice. Come and experience a deeper connection to your baby and sense of well-being. Yoga will help you prepare to give birth in an active and intuitive way, stretch and tone your body for an easier delivery and faster recovery. Learn to use the whole breath to relax and release fears for a gentler transition into motherhood. Taught by our Women & Children's Center nurses trained at Kirpalu in prenatal yoga. Wear comfortable clothing. Class is offered Mondays from 6:30 - 7:30 p.m. Cost is $65/per mom-to-be. The 2013 dates are:  July 8th - August 12; Sept. 9 - Oct. 21 (skipping Columbus Day) and November 18 - December 23rd. 
   
Breastfeeding Class

   Top

This class is intended for women who are planning on breastfeeding or are considering breastfeeding. Lactation consultants will discuss the advantages of breastfeeding, how to get started and stay breastfeeding, how to continue breastfeeding once returning to work and much more! Partners are strongly encouraged to attend also. Classes are offered once a month on a Tuesday from 6 - 8:30 p.m. Cost is $10. The 2013 dates are:   May 14th, June 11th, July 23rd, August 20th, and September 10th.
   
Birth Center Tour

   Top

A tour of the Women & Children's Center is given for those not attending childbirth classes or those who would like to see the Center.  Tours are scheduled for Tuesdays at 7PM the following dates;  May 14th, June 11th, July 9 and May 14th.

 

 
Waterbirth Class

 Top

This class is required for those who want waterbirth as an option for delivery. We will discuss the benefits of underwater birth, what to expect during labor and birth and when the waterbirth tub is appropriate. Please check with your midwife or doctor to know if waterbirth is an option for you. A tour of the Women & Children's Center and the waterbirth tub is included. There is no charge, however, registration is required. Class is held from 6 - 8 p.m. The 2013 dates are:  May 21, June 18, July 16 and August 20th.  .
 
Happiest Baby on the Block and Newborn Care

  Top

Happiest Baby on the Block will teach parents and caregivers simple techniques to help babies sleep longer and stay calmer. Learn how to soothe even the fussiest infant in minutes! Additional topics include aspects of newborn care such as diapering, bathing and umbilical cord care. Hands-on practice is encouraged. Parents will also learn about newborn development and newborn capabilities within the first few months of life. Cost is $35 and includes the Happiest Baby on the Block DVD. Classes offered evenings or Saturday mornings. Evening classes are 6:30 - 8:30 p.m. on May 7th and July 30th. Saturday classes are 9 - 11 a.m. on June 15th and August 24th.

   
Cesarean Delivery Class

 Top

This class is intended for those expecting to have a Cesarean birth (C-section). We will discuss what to expect when you arrive at the Women & Children's Center and the process of preparing you for your birth. A tour of the Center is included. Class is offered Mondays from 7 - 8 p.m. No charge. The 2013 dates are: April 15; July 15 and October 21.

 

 
Car Seat Safety Checks    Top
In collaboration with the Dover Police Department, we offer all parents an opportunity to see that their car seats are installed safely. Certified technicians will be available from 4 - 6:30 p.m. on the following Wednesdays:  May 15th and June 16th.  Registration is required by calling (603) 740-2867.

 

 
Sibling Class

 Top

Brothers- and sisters-to-be will learn about how the new baby will be born and talk about what it will be like to be a big brother or sister. This free class is intended for children ages 3 and older. Classes are offered from 5:30 - 7 p.m. The 2013 dates are:  April 3rd; May 1st; June 5th, July 10th and August 7th  . ~ Please bring an infant photo of your child.
   
Grandparents Class

 Top

This class is designed to help grandparents understand the changes in childbirth today and ways to support the new parents. A tour of the Women & Children's Center is included in this class which is offered at no Charge. This class is offered Saturdays from 10 a.m. - 12 noon. The 2013 dates are: May 18; July 27 and September 28.
   
Siblings at Birth

 Top

This class is for big brothers and sisters who will be present during the birth of their new baby! Children will learn about the hospital equipment they will see, the stages of labor and how they can help and what the new baby will look like during the delivery. Families will watch a movie and tour the Women & Children's Center. We work with each family to share this information in the way they are most comfortable.

Babysitting Course Top
The Education/Organizational Development Department offers a babysitting course for 11 - 14 year-olds. Class is offered one Saturday per month from 10 a.m. - 3 p.m. to review various babysitting responsibilities and basic first aid. Cost is $30. Please call (603) 740-2858 to register.

New Parent Support Group

 Top

Come and meet other new parents and discuss topics of concern to you. Facilitated by lactation consultants and child life specialists. Held every Monday, EXCEPT for holidays, from 1:30 - 3 p.m. No registration necessary for this class.

 

 Infant Massage

 Top

This class in intended for moms and dads, or caretakers, interested in learning how to communicate love and respect through nurturing touch of infant massage.
