People come and go, but one of the things that has remained consistent at Wentworth-Douglass Hospital throughout the years is the volunteer work of Clara and Winthrop "Skogie" Skoglund. The pair, who has been married for 61 years, has volunteered a total of 60 years at the hospital. Clara started volunteering in the coffee shop and Skogie began by registering patients in the Emergency Room. Now, Clara delivers magazines to patients and Skogie helps out in the hospital Cafeteria and the Information Desk.

Clara and Skogie said they began volunteering as a way to give back to the community and to help people in need. Skogie began volunteering after he retired from the University of New Hampshire. He was the head of the Animal Sciences Department at UNH and also served in the military during World War II.

"It's something to do in your old age," Clara said. "It gets us out and doing things," Skogie added. "We wish more people would volunteer."

Clara and Skogie are living proof that keeping busy and giving back are the best ways to stay young. Wentworth-Douglass Hospital is lucky to have such a dedicated couple as part of our health team.
