Diabetes Services is dedicated to helping you live successfully with diabetes. We provide individualized diabetes education and self-management training for children and adults, in private and small group sessions. As an educator-based practice, we strive to supplement the services provided by your physician, and work in a cooperative effort with your entire health care team. Diabetes Services at Wentworth-Douglass Hospital meets the national standards for Diabetes self-management education by the American Diabetes Association.
Our outpatient Diabetes Services are offered at the Wentworth-Douglass Professional Building off Exit 9 of the Spaulding Turnpike at 10 Members Way, Dover, NH.
Our Diabetes Services program covers all aspects of Type 1, Type 2, Pre-Diabetes and gestational diabetes. After an initial visit, a plan will be tailored to you and may cover:
- Why is monitoring important?
- Should I buy a meter?
- What to eat?
- Understanding some basics about diabetes
- Exercise (programs at The Works Family Health & Fitness Center)
- Guidelines for how to eat on sick days (illness, dental procedure, operation or stressful event that effects your eating)
- Foot care

You may be referred at any time by yourself, your doctor or other healthcare provider. You will need a prescription or referral requesting diabetes self-management education from your doctor if you would like insurance coverage for services. Diabetes Educational Classes and Support Groups:
Road to Success: 4-part comprehensive diabetes self-management training:
This program is taught by a Registered Dietitian and a Registered Nurse who are also Certified Diabetes Educators. You will have the opportunity to explore and share your diabetes experiences with other people. A referral is required and the class will be billed to you insurance(s). The program is covered by Medicare and other insurances. To attend, please call Diabetes Services at (603) 740-2887 and select the outpatient scheduling option.
Build a Better Diet:
This class is perfect for you if you've been recently diagnosed with Pre-diabetes or are looking for a simple nutrition refresher class. The class is FREE and takes place at 10 Members Way, Dover, NH. For dates, times and to register, please call (603) 740-2887 and select the outpatient scheduling option.
Q & A about Diabetes:
This class is ideal if you have general questions about diabetes or have not seen an educator or dieitian within a year. The content of the class is always changing and is question-driven. The class is FREE and takes place at 10 Members Way, Dover, NH. For dates, times and to register, please call (603) 740-2887 and select the outpatient scheduling option.
Type 1 Support Group:
These quarterly support groups are for adults with Type 1 Diabetes and are led by Wentworth Health Partners Nurse Practitioner Jen Thomas, FNPC, and Physician Michael Davidson, DO. Registration is not required. Please call (603) 740-2887 for more information.
Diabetes Support Group:
These monthly educational support group meetings are held on the last Thursday of every month (except in the summer) from 7 - 8 p.m. at Wentworth-Douglass Hospital. Registration is not required.
Diabetes Services also offers a Sharps Exchange program for the safe transfer and disposal of needles and sharp supplies from our patients with diabetes. It is held in the Main Lobby at Wentworth-Douglass Hospital on September 25 and December 18, 2014, from 5 - 6 p.m. Bring your old sharps container, and we'll issue you a new one.
Programs for Kids with Diabetes & their Families:
We offer Camp Lance-a-Lot for teens and one for families, Spring Weekend Adventure, Camp Hot Shots and Diabetes Day Camp. All camps are designed to engage, educate and empower children and their families to live well with diabetes, have fun and share. Camp Lance-a-Lot for Families - for children and their families to bond with other children and families in a wonderful, nurturing environment.
Spring Adventure Weekend - held yearly on a weekend day to explore nature at White Pine Nature Park.
Camp Hot Shots - our very successful summer camp for children with diabetes held at the end of June each year at The Works Family Health & Fitness Center in Somersworth. This camp is for 7-13 year-old children with diabetes.
Diabetes Day Camp - held yearly on a weekend day at The Works Family Health & Fitness Center in September.
Camp Lance-a-Lot for Teens - held yearly in Sept/Oct over a weekend at Camp Merrowvista in the Ossipee Mountains.
