Childbirth Education Classes

Pre-Registration and payment is required for the following childbirth classes along with a registration form:

  1. Prepared Childbirth 5-Week Series Class  
  2. Weekend Prepared Childbirth
  3. One-Day Childbirth Class  
  4. HypnoBirthing®
  5. Prenatal Yoga (Kripalu)
  6. Breastfeeding
  7. Happiest Baby on the Block® - Newborn Care and Development
  8. Infant Massage
  9. Babysitting Course

There is no fee for the following classes, but pre-registration is required:

There is NO pre-registration for the following:

The Works Family Health & Fitness Center in Somersworth, NH also offers new mom exercise classes
such as Prenatal Aquatic Exercise and Mommy & Me Exercise.

The following classes are held at Wentworth-Douglass Hospital in Dover:

Prepared Childbirth Series 


This class includes traditional childbirth education, including an overview of labor, birth, medications, potential complications and postpartum care. A tour of the Women & Children's Center is included in this class. Classes meet one night a week for 5 weeks from 6:30 - 8:30 p.m. Cost is $110/per couple. Upcoming dates include: Wednesdays Nov. 18- Dec. 16th; January 6 - Feb. 3th 2016 and Feb 15th -March 14th 2016

Weekend Prepared Childbirth Class 


This 2-day class has been designed as an alternative to the 5-week series, offering the same information. A tour of the Women & Children's Center is included in this class. Class is held Saturday and Sunday 9 a.m. - 1 p.m. Cost is $145/per couple.  Upcoming dates are: Nov. 14th & 15th, Dec. 12 & 13 and January 9th & 10th 2016.
One-Day Childbirth Class Top
This one day class provides you with the same information you would receive in the two-day weekend class (listed above). A tour of the Women & Children's Center is included. Cost is $145. This class is offered the following weekends on either a Saturday or Sunday from 9 - 4 p.m. Saturday November 21st and Saturday December 19th.
HypnoBirthing Class


In this class you will learn a relaxation technique to help you maintain an atmosphere of calm and relaxation during birth. This class will guide you through the philosophy and techniques of normal, gentle birthing.  Partners will learn effective tools in assisting the birthing mother. A tour of the Women & Children's Center is included in this class.  Cost is $145/per couple, which includes materials.  Classes are offered one night a week from 6:30-8:30pm for 5 weeks.  Upcoming Dates:  Tuesays November 17th - December 15th.

This class will be changing for 2016.  The new Class is called Mind Body Birth.  More details to come, but dates for this class are as follows:  Thursday Jan. 14th - Feb. 11th and Thursday March 10th - April 7th.

Prenatal Yoga


This 4-week series is offered to you at any stage of your pregnancy and at any level of practice. Come and experience a deeper connection to your baby and sense of well-being. Yoga will help you prepare to give birth in an active and intuitive way, stretch and tone your body for an easier delivery and faster recovery. Learn to use the whole breath to relax and release fears for a gentler transition into motherhood. Taught by our Women & Children's Center nurses trained at Kirpalu in prenatal yoga. Wear comfortable clothing. Class is offered from 6:30-7:30p.m. Cost is $50/per mom-to-be. Upcoming dates are: Tuesday Oct. 6th-Oct. 27th and Mondays Nov. 2 - Nov. 23rd.  Please note that the 4 weeks series is a change for 2015.  You may have recieved information that talks about a 6 week series. 

Breastfeeding Class


This class is intended for women who are planning on breastfeeding or are considering breastfeeding. Lactation consultants will discuss the advantages of breastfeeding, how to get started and stay breastfeeding, how to continue breastfeeding once returning to work and much more! Partners are strongly encouraged to attend also. Classes are offered once a month on a Tuesday from 6 - 8:30PM. Cost is $10. Upcoming dates are: Tuesdays;    December 15th, January 12th and February 16th

Birth Center Tour


Please note that a tour of the Women & Children's Center is given during all childbirth classes. Tours are scheduled for people not attending classes once a month on a Tuesday at 7PM and once a month on Saturdays at 1:30PM.  Tuesday dates are as follows: Dec. 1st, Jan. 19th Saturday dates are as follows: Dec. 12th and Jan. 9th


Happiest Baby on the Block and Newborn Care


Happiest Baby on the Block will teach parents and caregivers simple techniques to help babies sleep longer and stay calmer. Learn how to soothe even the fussiest infant in minutes! Additional topics include aspects of newborn care such as diapering, bathing and umbilical cord care. Hands-on practice is encouraged. Parents will also learn about newborn development and newborn capabilities within the first few months of life. Cost is $35 and includes the Happiest Baby on the Block DVD. Classes offered evenings or Saturday mornings. Evening classes are 6:30 - 8:30 p.m.  November 17th and January 26th; Saturday classes are 9 - 11 a.m. February 6th

Cesarean Delivery Class


This class is intended for those expecting to have a Cesarean birth (C-section). We will discuss what to expect when you arrive at the Women & Children's Center and the process of preparing you for your birth. A tour of the Center is included. Class is offered Mondays from 7 - 8 p.m. No charge.  October 19th 2015


Car Seat Safety Checks    Top

In collaboration with the Dover Police Department, we offer all parents an opportunity to see that their car seats are installed safely. A certified technician will be available from 4 - 6:30 p.m. on the following Wednesdays: There are no scheduled dates at this time.  Private appointments are arranged by calling (603) 740-2867.


Sibling Class


Brothers- and sisters-to-be will learn about how the new baby will be born and talk about what it will be like to be a big brother or sister. This free class is intended for children ages 3 and older. Classes are offered from 5:30 - 7 p.m. Upcoming dates:  Dec. 2nd and January 6th 2016.   ~ Please bring an infant photo of your child.  

  Siblings at Birth: This class is for big brothers and sisters who will be present during the birth of their new baby! Children will learn about the hospital equipment they will see, the stages of labor and how they can help and what the new baby will look like during the delivery. Families will watch a movie and tour the Women & Children's Center. We work with each family to share this information in the way they are most comfortable.  ~ To schedule, call Child Life Services at (603) 740-2496.


Grandparents Class


This class is designed to help grandparents understand the changes in childbirth today and ways to support the new parents. A tour of the Women & Children's Center is included in this class which is offered at no Charge. This class is offered one saturday every other month from 10 a.m. - 12 noon. Upcoming dates include: Nov. 21st.
 Infant Massage


This class is intended for moms, dads, or caretakers, interested in learning how to communicate love and respect through nurturing touch of infant massage. Cost is $20. per family. This class can be taken prenatally or it can be taken with infants up to 3 months.  Please call for more information.

Babysitting Course Top
The Education/Organizational Development Department offers a babysitting course for 11 - 14 year-olds. Class is offered one Saturday per month from 10 a.m. - 3 p.m. to review various babysitting responsibilities and basic first aid. Cost is $30. Please call (603) 740-2858 to register.

New Parent Support Group


Come and meet other new parents and discuss topics of concern to you. Facilitated by lactation consultants and child life specialists. Held every Monday, EXCEPT for holidays, from 1:30 - 3:00 p.m. No registration necessary for this class.
